Sources of law
The principal source of New York state contract law are the decisions of the New York state courts including the New York Court of Appeals, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court and the New York Supreme Court. Copyright is governed by federal law and in particular the Copyright Act of 1976 (“the Copyright Act”). However, a dispute over the interpretation of a contract to transfer the exclusive rights comprised in copyright is a state law matter (see Gary Friedrich Enters., LLC v. Marvel Characters, Inc., 716 F.3d 302, 313).
