16. It has recently been necessary for the Court of Appeal to underline the importance of adherence to proper standards of appellate advocacy in immigration appeals. It is not permissible, whether in that court or in the Upper Tribunal, for advocates to consider that they are at liberty to advance any argument which occurs to them, whether or not it appears in the grounds of appeal and whether or not any notice of the argument has been given to the respondent or the Upper Tribunal. 1 The grounds of appeal frame the arguments which are to be advanced.
